The American Medical Association has this antiquated video that helped me first realize the extent to which patients can be unaware of the details (and even the big picture) of their medical care. As medical professionals, people are indoctrinated in medical jargon and technical discussions often for most their waking hours. After several years of training and practice, it’s easy to lose touch with the average American’s understanding of their healthcare. This is a good reminder, and a good way to share with colleagues how much providers should thoroughly communicate with their patients.
